Facebook account disabled in the EU

An EU resident with a disabled Facebook profile: the appeal, the Digital Services Act, and out-of-court bodies.

Updated

Short answer. Appeal in the usual way first. If Meta keeps the decision, the Digital Services Act lets you take it to a certified out-of-court dispute body such as Appeals Centre Europe. Keep every screenshot and reference number.

Steps

Appeal through Facebook.

Who can use it

People and businesses in the EU.

What to do first

Here is the fuller version, step by step.

Steps

  1. Appeal through Facebook.
  2. Save the final decision and reference.
  3. Submit to a certified out-of-court body.

Who can use it

People and businesses in the EU. The UK has separate rules.

What to do first

Here is the fuller version, step by step.

  1. Log in on a device you have used before and read the notice in full; it says whether you can appeal and how long you have.
  2. If you were hacked or cannot log in, start at facebook.com/hacked, even if you are not sure it was a hack.
  3. If you no longer have the email or phone, use the 'Find your account' page with any older email or number you once used.
  4. On a two-factor screen, choose 'Need another way to authenticate?' (or 'Having trouble?' on Android) to reach the identity options.
  5. Check Settings, then Account status, for restrictions on posting, messaging or Marketplace.

Notes for European Union

How it works with Ban Help

  1. Message us on WhatsApp or email with the username and a screenshot of the notice.
  2. We tell you honestly whether this is something we can help with. Terms are agreed with you before any work starts.
  3. We prepare the appeal and the supporting details, to go through the platform’s own channels.
  4. We stay in touch while you wait. The platform makes the final decision, and nobody can promise the outcome.

Good to know.

What ID is accepted?

A passport, driving licence or national ID card is the usual choice. The name should match the profile.

Can friends help me get back in?

Not any more. Facebook says trusted contacts is no longer supported.

Can I recover without my old email?

Often yes, through facebook.com/hacked or the identity check, if the account has enough other information.

How long do I have to appeal?

The disabled notice shows the window. Do not wait for the last day.

Does Facebook have a phone number?

Meta says it has no general public phone line for support and warns that numbers claiming to be support may be scams.
