How to appeal an Instagram suspension

The exact steps to appeal an Instagram suspension from the notice, what to write, and what happens after you send it.

Updated

Short answer. Open Instagram, tap the suspension notice, choose Disagree with decision and follow the prompts. Write one short, honest explanation, complete any selfie or ID step, and send it once. You usually have 180 days from the notice to do this.

The steps, in order

Log in on the app you normally use, on your usual Wi-Fi or mobile data, without a VPN.

What to write in the box

Keep it to three sentences.

After you press send

The notice changes to say your appeal is in progress.

The steps, in order

  1. Log in on the app you normally use, on your usual Wi-Fi or mobile data, without a VPN.
  2. Tap the notice, then Disagree with decision.
  3. If asked, confirm your phone or email with the code Instagram sends.
  4. Record the video selfie or upload ID if the screen asks for it.
  5. Add a short note if a text box appears, then submit.
  6. Screenshot the confirmation screen.

What to write in the box

Keep it to three sentences. Say who runs the account, that you believe the decision is wrong, and anything that might explain unusual activity: a new phone, travel, a scheduling app, a past hack.

Leave out anger, threats and long policy quotes. They do not help a reviewer.

After you press send

The notice changes to say your appeal is in progress. Most people hear nothing by email. Check by logging in once a day. If it stays the same for weeks, read appeal sent, no reply.

What to do first

Here is the fuller version, step by step.

  1. Open the Instagram app on the phone you normally use and read the full notice, including any date shown.
  2. If there is a 'Disagree with decision' or appeal button, use it once and finish every step it asks for.
  3. Check Settings, then Account Status, for the post or rule involved when you can still log in.
  4. If someone else changed your login, look for the email from security@mail.instagram.com and use its link to undo the change, then go to instagram.com/hacked.
  5. Answer any selfie or ID request in good light, with no filters, glasses or hat.

QUICK ANSWERS

Good to know.

Can I appeal more than once?

The notice usually allows one appeal. Extra attempts through other forms do not reset anything.

Does a longer appeal work better?

No. Clear and short reads better than long and emotional.

Is it safe to use a VPN?

Turn it off while appealing or recovering. A new location can trigger extra checks.

Do I need Meta Verified to get help?

No. Meta Verified adds chat and email support for active subscribers, but appeals and the hacked page are open to everyone.

How long does Instagram take to decide?

Instagram does not publish a fixed time. Some decisions come back the same day, others take weeks.
