Instagram account disabled in the UK

Instagram disabled your account in the UK. The appeal, the Online Safety Act position, and the record to keep.

Updated

Short answer. Appeal in the app first. The UK Online Safety Act requires platforms to run a complaints process, but it does not give Ofcom the job of reopening single accounts, so the in-app appeal is still the main route.

Steps

Read the notice and note the date.

Business accounts

If the account belongs to a UK company, have the company name and number ready.

What to do first

Here is the fuller version, step by step.

Steps

  1. Read the notice and note the date.
  2. Appeal once in the app.
  3. If the decision stands, use the complaint link Instagram gives under the Online Safety Act.
  4. Keep screenshots of every step.

Business accounts

If the account belongs to a UK company, have the company name and number ready. Meta may ask for them when an ad account is linked.

What to do first

Here is the fuller version, step by step.

  1. Open the Instagram app on the phone you normally use and read the full notice, including any date shown.
  2. If there is a 'Disagree with decision' or appeal button, use it once and finish every step it asks for.
  3. Check Settings, then Account Status, for the post or rule involved when you can still log in.
  4. If someone else changed your login, look for the email from security@mail.instagram.com and use its link to undo the change, then go to instagram.com/hacked.
  5. Answer any selfie or ID request in good light, with no filters, glasses or hat.

QUICK ANSWERS

Good to know.

Can I complain to Ofcom?

Ofcom looks at how platforms handle complaints overall, not at individual accounts.

Is it safe to use a VPN?

Turn it off while appealing or recovering. A new location can trigger extra checks.

Do I need Meta Verified to get help?

No. Meta Verified adds chat and email support for active subscribers, but appeals and the hacked page are open to everyone.

Will I lose my followers?

If the account is restored, it normally comes back with its followers and posts.

How long does Instagram take to decide?

Instagram does not publish a fixed time. Some decisions come back the same day, others take weeks.
