Instagram account disabled in the US

A disabled Instagram account in the United States: the appeal route, what to keep, and when outside help makes sense.

Updated

Short answer. In the US the route is the same as anywhere: open the notice in the app and appeal once, with the name on your ID. There is no US regulator that reopens accounts, so the in-app appeal and Meta's own review are what count.

Steps

Open Instagram and read the notice.

Keep a record

Screenshot each screen with the date.

What to do first

Here is the fuller version, step by step.

Steps

  1. Open Instagram and read the notice.
  2. Tap the appeal option and give your full name and the email on the account.
  3. If asked, record the video selfie in daylight on your usual phone.
  4. Log in once a day to check the status.

Keep a record

Screenshot each screen with the date. Save any email from Instagram about the account. If the account earns money, note what it brings in; that helps explain why it matters.

What to do first

Here is the fuller version, step by step.

  1. Open the Instagram app on the phone you normally use and read the full notice, including any date shown.
  2. If there is a 'Disagree with decision' or appeal button, use it once and finish every step it asks for.
  3. Check Settings, then Account Status, for the post or rule involved when you can still log in.
  4. If someone else changed your login, look for the email from security@mail.instagram.com and use its link to undo the change, then go to instagram.com/hacked.
  5. Answer any selfie or ID request in good light, with no filters, glasses or hat.

Notes for United States

If money was taken, report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov and to the FBI's IC3. Neither reopens accounts, but a report helps with banks and card disputes.

How it works with Ban Help

  1. Message us on WhatsApp or email with the username and a screenshot of the notice.
  2. We tell you honestly whether this is something we can help with. Terms are agreed with you before any work starts.
  3. We prepare the appeal and the supporting details, to go through the platform’s own channels.
  4. We stay in touch while you wait. The platform makes the final decision, and nobody can promise the outcome.

QUICK ANSWERS

Good to know.

Can a lawyer get my account back?

A lawyer can write to Meta, but there is no quick legal route in the US for a single account.

Does it help to post about it?

Rarely. Stick to the official route.

Can I download my photos while it is disabled?

Sometimes a 'Download your information' option is offered on the notice or in Accounts Center. If not, it is not available until the account is back.

Will I lose my followers?

If the account is restored, it normally comes back with its followers and posts.

Do I need Meta Verified to get help?

No. Meta Verified adds chat and email support for active subscribers, but appeals and the hacked page are open to everyone.
